lungs. Also causing carcinoma of larynx, oral cavity, bladder, cervix and esophagus.
Nicotine is the major substance in smoke whose binding capacity to brain receptors is
enhanced by levulinic acid present in smoke. This causes kick of nicotine .Smoke from
the burning end of cigarettes contains 4000 chemicals and 40 carcinogens. The lungs of
smokers collect an annual deposit of one to one and a half pounds of this black material
which contains many poisonous chemicals such as carbon monoxide, formaldehyde,
hydrogen cyanide and nitrous  oxides. Like many carcinogenic compounds these act as
tumor promoters by directly acting on the genetic makeup of cells. During smoking
nicotine is absorbed in the lungs within 8 to 10 seconds. It quickly moves into the blood
stream and is circulated through brain. Nicotine can also enter the blood stream through
mucous membrane, i.e., lining of mouth if tobacco is chewed or through nose (by
snuffing) and even through the skin. Our brain is made of billions of nerve cells which
communicate with each other by chemical messengers called neurotransmitters.
1 Nicotine being one of the powerful nerve poisons binds selectively to nicotine receptors
located in the brain, autonomic ganglia, medulla located throughout the brain playing a
critical role in cognitive processes and memory.
